Ominous Opening Lines

Ever since I’ve read Angie’s Perfect Opening Lines I wanted to make a list of my own. At first I wanted to share all of my favorite opening lines, but there are so many of them; so today I’ll give you only ominous opening lines. Those that instantly sucked me in and made my heart bit faster in anticipation. All these quotes are from the books I love.

“My father took one hundred and thirty-two minutes to die. I counted.”
from ‘On the Jellicoe Road’ by Marchetta, Melina

“It is the first day of November and so, today, someone will die.”
from ‘The Scorpio Races’ by Stiefvater, Maggie

“I was raised to marry a monster.”
from ‘Cruel Beauty’ by Hodge, Rosamund

“In all your life, your only choice,” Aunt Léonie said to her once, “is the path of needles or the path of pins.”
Rachelle remembered that, the day that she killed her.
from ‘Crimson Bound’ by Hodge, Rosamund

“My mother loved me more than life itself. That’s how everything went wrong.
I wake with fear prickling at my skin.”
from ‘Gilded Ashes (Cruel Beauty Universe)’ by Hodge, Rosamund

“He’d buried her alive.”
from ‘Exquisite Captive’ by Demetrios, Heather

Feel free to share your ominous opening lines in comments.

  1. I love this post, it’s such a great idea! Kudos to you and Angie. :)

On the Jellicoe Road has one of the most iconic opening lines in YA, it’s a completely perfect choice. And it also gives a pretty good indicator of what the story’s going to be like. Same goes for the Crimson Bound quote, I loved that opening line!

  2. I really like the idea of this post Ksenia, I can’t remember any of my favourite ominous opening lines from the top of my head, but I do love the one from On the Jellicoe Road and the one you’ve shared from Exquisite Captive certainly makes me want to give that book a go a lot sooner! Thanks for sharing!

  3. I don’t have any and that makes me feel bad. I never pay enough attention to opening lines I’m too busy diving in and getting caught up in the story. I will attempt to pay better attention though because these opening lines are perfect. I really want to read Scorpio Races and who knew Rosamund Hodges opening lines were so spot on?

  4. Ooh, I love these Ksenia! Especially the Scorpio Races quote. I still haven’t read that one but it’s been on my shelf forever. I’m a massive Melina Marchetta fan, I wish they’d bring out a box set of her titles with new covers. Mine could use an update.
