The reasons I don’t read ARCs
I read a lot of backlist books. There were moments in my blogging life, when I felt like a total weirdo, because everyone read new releases and ARCs.
Last week one of my friends asked me why I didn’t read ARCs. There are several reasons and today I share with your my thoughts.
- I don’t want to feel pressure.
- I’m a mood reader.
- I don’t want to read books that I don’t like.
- I don’t want publishers or authors influence my opinion of the book.
- I don’t have time for interactions with publishers about ARCs.
- I’m free not to write a review on a book, if I don’t want to.
When you get an ARC, you need to write your review by a certain date. Reading, reviewing and blogging are my hobbies. My hobbies are supposed to make me happy, and deadlines make me very unhappy.
I can’t deal with a reading schedule. I don’t want to plan which book I would read next. I love that moment, when I’m choosing my next read. So many possibilities, so many roads ahead of me…
When I pick up a released book my chances to like it are high. Why? Because many reviewers have already read it (including my trusted friends with similar taste in books). So I can choose a book for myself. When dealing with ARCs, my chances are not as good. Even with a book from my favorite author and a promising blurb, I still can end up not enjoying it.
I know that I don’t have to write a positive review for ARCs, but it’s hard not to feel guilty after I wrote a negative review on a book that a publisher kindly sent me.
Since last fall my real life became hectic. I’ve only read 50 books in 2015, which is a lot less than I planned. And it looks like I won’t have much time for my hobby this year. So I want to spend this time reading interesting books and interacting with my bookish friends.
There are times when I finish a book and I’m so excited that I write a long thorough review, and there are times when it can be just a couple of sentences on social media, just to tell my opinion to my friends. I have absolutely no obligations to write reviews.
